Additional Omaha Cigarette Tax Took Effect January 1st
If you live in Omaha it's going to cost you more to light up in 2013. A three percent occupation tax on cigarette sales goes into effect January 1st.
The new tax is meant to raise roughly $35 million for the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s $370 million dollar cancer complex.
The City Council ended up approving a scaled down version of the original tax proposal, which was sitting at seven percent, according to WOWT. The council expects to raise that $35 million over the next decade.
